Why after many years of research, there is no cure for osteoarthritis? When can we expect one effective cure?

Ageless Knees

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Despite extensive research efforts over the years, a definitive cure for osteoarthritis has remained elusive. Here are some reasons why a cure has not yet been found:

✅ Ageless Knees

Lack of Understanding

We envision curing OA in near future and set it as the target for global OA alliance and Asian Task Force. Although several herbs have been used in Ayurveda for many years, many of them are commonly used in human remedies; their use in human beings is assumed to be completely safe [102,103]. Another study established that supplementation with EPA and DHA blocked the deterioration of cartilage caused by IL-1β [95]. The involvement of EPA and DHA was found to inhibit the release of sGAGs from cartilage explants induced by IL-1β. Additionally, fish oil supplementation in combination with NSAIDs has been shown to alleviate discomfort and enhance the weight-bearing capability of knee cartilage in laboratory dogs [96]. Hyaluronic acid is a structural polysaccharide present in the cartilage extracellular matrix that plays a crucial role in the development of SF [83].

With help, people may be able to reduce their risk by stopping smoking, maintaining a moderate weight, and learning ways of managing stress. Various over-the-counter medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesics, can help treat symptoms of arthritis. In this article, we look at treatments for arthritis in the short and long term, alternative measures, and possible complications of leaving arthritis untreated. To learn whether canakinumab actually can slow osteoarthritis, we need a proper trial that enrolls people with osteoarthritis, and compares symptoms and x-rays after treatment with canakinumab or placebo. Over the last several years, there has been an increased focus on the molecular mechanisms of how herbal drugs work in the body. The ancient Ayurvedic formulations Triphala churna and Triphaghula, along with Balaraja and Dashmoolasa, are used to treat the disease [105,106].

Joint pain and stiffness can become severe enough to make daily tasks difficult. Other treatment options may include strength training and supplements. It can take anywhere from several months to several years to reach an advanced stage of OA.

The presence of IL-17 in the blood, SF, and synovium biopsy samples in patients with OA is strongly linked to the occurrence of knee OA (increasing KL grade). SF IL-17 may be a valuable biochemical predictor of the incidence and progression of knee OA [[22], [23], [24]]. The researchers also identified differences in disease risk for non-weight-bearing joints, such as the wrists and elbows, compared to weight-bearing joints, such as the knees and hips that help carry our body weight when we stand and walk. People develop osteoarthritis when the protective cartilage that cushions the bones in their joints begins to break down, causing the bones to rub together.

One of the main challenges in finding a cure for osteoarthritis is the complexity of the disease. Osteoarthritis is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, making it difficult to target with a one-size-fits-all treatment.

Slow Progress in Research

Research into osteoarthritis has been hindered by limited funding and resources compared to other diseases. This has led to slower progress in developing new treatments and therapies for osteoarthritis.

High Variability Among Patients

Osteoarthritis manifests differently in each patient, with varying degrees of pain and disability. This variability makes it challenging to develop a universal cure that would be effective for all individuals with osteoarthritis.

When can we expect one effective cure?

While it is difficult to predict an exact timeline for when a cure for osteoarthritis will be available, ongoing research efforts offer hope for the future. Scientists are exploring new treatment options such as stem cell therapy, gene therapy, and personalized medicine approaches that may lead to more effective cures in the coming years.
